This week I will be traveling in Chile on vacation near Santiago. Our cousin will be in Chile as well in his work as an Agronomist for a seed company in the south end of the country. I will admit I was really curious as to why as an Agronomist at a seed company in Manitoba might be going to Chile. I knew this wasn't the first time, so being a data nerd, I started researching... Here's what I learned....
Chile is well known for its early stance and protection of intellectual property for crops/seed development. Chile is considered a leader in seed production in the southern hemisphere. I am including a little map below to show the size of Chile vs. that of Argentina and Brazil.
ANPROS is the Chilean Seed Association, and is a member of the International Seed Federation. Data available on the International Seed Federation website indicates that Chile was the #16 exporter of field crops seed by value in USD Millions in 2015 (the latest data available). I’m including the data below as I honestly had no idea what the value of seed production was, or what countries were leading in seed exports so thought others might be interested too.
Cheers from Chile. - Karen : firstname.lastname@example.org
