Farm Femmes came to be because Karen and I believe that we can add a unique perspective to the discussions about agriculture. My background as a teacher and Karen’s background in data science each play an important part in shaping the future of agriculture. Over the past year Karen and I have been batting around ideas about how to contribute to agriculture in an authentic, meaningful way and in a way that represented our beliefs and values. Farm Femmes is our way of bringing our unique strengths, and the unique strengths of women in agriculture, to the conversation in a more public way.
Consumers are paying more attention to their food sourcing than they have in the past so it is important to educate farmers and consumers about their relationship and interdependence. Advances in farm technology are providing farmers with more data than ever before, but turning this data into usable information can be a challenge. Farm Femmes is our attempt to address these two challenges and to bring a little international flair to a future-oriented agriculture discussion. We hope to speak to your heads and your hearts as we post about innovation, technology and about real-life on the farm. Our intention is to reflect the joys and hardships; the victories and the challenges. Mostly, we are hoping to provide a space to engage in conversations with you about why ag matters, why farmers matter and how we can continue to learn and grow the future of farming.
Stay tuned for our first posts about what it means to be a (female) farmer AND what big data can mean for agriculture.
